この像は、2歳の時に被爆した佐々木禎子さんが、10年後に白血病で亡くなったことをきっかけに、同級生たちが、「原爆で亡くなったすべての子どもたちのために慰霊碑をつくろう」と呼びかけ、全国の3,200校余りの学校や海外からの支援により、昭和33年(1958年)5月5日に完成したものです。(広島市ホームページより)
